How do I become a member & what
are the benefits?
We are a registered society at
both Newcastle and Northumbria
universities, you can become a
member by going into your union
and joining at the welcome desk,
or online via our website.
During fresher week, we are
present at both union society
fairs, you can come and meet us
and join us then.
You can come to any event if you
are not a member, however, you
will need to pay the non-member
entrance fee.
Benefits:
If you are a Fresher you will
receive a fresher goodie bag
when you join, this in the past
has included pint glasses, USB
sticks, J-Socks (Genius we
know!) posters, pens,
highlighters and more!
When you join you also become a
member of the UJS (Union of
Jewish Students) which entitles
you to receive information on
national events being held.
Best of all you receive discount
at Newcastle J-Soc events,
membership is only £5 for
students and £10 for young
professionals, the
average saving at events is £3,
attend just a few events and you
have made your membership money
back in savings!
What sort of events do you run?
Every year we run many different
events both social and
educational.
Regular events include:
- Friday Night Shabbat Meals
- Bagel Lunches
- Drinks Gatherings
- Union Quiz team
- Cinema & Comedy Club Trips
- Educational talks / presentations
Special Events:
- Fireworks Night
Our now famous Fireworks Night has been
featured in both the Jewish
Chronicle and
Jewish Telegraph. Large fireworks, great
food, chocolate fountain and
plenty of
booze ensures the night goes with a real
bang! Nobody does this night
like us!
- Sukkot Crawl
A highly popular event, which sees us
travel to 4 different Sukkot, we
have drinks in
the first, starters in the second, mains in
the third and desert in the
fourth!
- Northern Region Weekend Newcastle
We team up with all the other J-Socs in the
North including Durham and
Scotland for
one big weekend in the Toon! Friday Night,
Saturday Lunch & a big Saturday
Night
finale is how it works! Just be prepared
for two late nights and plenty
of great food
and even more drink!
- Burns Ball
Join us in Scotland for their annual
charity Burns Ball, it's always
a great night, so get
your kilts at the ready!
We welcome any suggestions for
events, so if you would like to
see an event happen let us know,
remember it's your J-Soc!
Is it Religious?
We cater for people of all
backgrounds whether you go to
Shule three times a day or just
once a year. We are not just a
religious society, we hold
Social, Educational and
Religious events.
The aim of the society is to
hold events which allow Jewish
Students of all backgrounds to
come together, everyone is
welcome!
I'm a Postgrad / Young
Professional can I become a
member?
Of course! We have members who
are doing post graduate degrees
or have recently started a job
in the area.
Do you have a Hillel House?
Yes we do, but it is
non-residential. We hold events
such as Friday Nights and Bagel
Lunches at Hillel.
